Roberts shows the two seated colossi of Amenhotep III on the west bank at Thebes, near modern Luxor, with the seasonal Nile flood spreading across the plain around them. Ancient travelers knew the northern statue as the "singing" Memnon, which was said to sound at dawn until the Roman emperor Septimius Severus repaired it in the early third century and it fell silent. Roberts made his sketches on his tour of Egypt and Nubia in 1838-1839, and Louis Haghe turned them into color lithographs for the volumes published in London by F. G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. The plate reflects the European fascination with Egypt's monuments in the decades before photography became common.
