The hall of columns at Karnak, near Thebes (modern Luxor), is one of the largest religious spaces ever built, and this color lithograph shows part of its crowded forest of stone shafts. David Roberts, a Scottish painter, traveled through Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839 and sketched sites like this on the spot. Louis Haghe turned those sketches into lithographs, which were issued in parts between 1846 and 1849 as *Egypt and Nubia*. The Great Hypostyle Hall was begun under Seti I and completed under his son Ramesses II, so the print captures architecture more than three thousand years old.
