The lithograph shows the broken fragments of the great seated colossus at the Memnonium, the mortuary temple of Ramesses II on the west bank at Thebes, where the shattered limbs and sections of the statue lie scattered across the ground. Travelers in the nineteenth century often linked these ruins to the Greek legend of Memnon, the hero whose statue was said to sing at dawn. David Roberts drew the scene during his tour of Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned the sketches into color lithographs for this series, published in London between 1846 and 1849.
