Roberts drew this view of the Temple of Medamout, a ruined sanctuary on the east bank near Thebes (modern Luxor), dedicated mainly to the falcon-headed war god Montu. The lithograph belongs to *Egypt & Nubia*, the lavish series that grew out of Roberts's sketching tour of 1838 to 1839. Louis Haghe translated his on-the-spot drawings into color stone prints, which F.G. Moon issued in parts between 1846 and 1849. Such plates helped European readers see Egypt's monuments in atmospheric detail, at a time when many of them were still half buried in sand and rubble.
