Roberts's lithograph shows the entrance to the Temple of Amun at Thebes, the vast sacred complex at Karnak on the east bank of the Nile, near modern Luxor. David Roberts, a Scottish painter, traveled through Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839 and recorded monuments on the spot, and this plate was one of many he prepared for a multivolume publication. Louis Haghe turned his sketches into color lithographs, which allowed British readers in the 1840s to see Egypt's ruins in a form close to the original drawings. The print is valued for showing how European audiences first pictured ancient Egyptian architecture.
