This lithograph shows the great entrance to the Temple of Luxor, the towering pylon that Ramesses II added in front of the older temple, with the seated colossi and obelisk set before it. David Roberts made his sketches during his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned them into color lithographs for *Egypt & Nubia*, issued in London by F. G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. The plate reflects the mid-century European fascination with ancient Egypt, when such views shaped how many readers imagined the monuments. Note that one of the pylon's two obelisks was given to France and now stands in Paris, a reminder of how these sites were later reshaped by collecting.
