Roberts drew the grand portico of the Temple of Philae, the Ptolemaic sanctuary dedicated to Isis on an island in the Nile near Aswan, during his 1838 to 1839 journey through Egypt and Nubia. This color lithograph was printed by Louis Haghe for the publisher F.G. Moon as part of *Egypt & Nubia*, issued in parts between 1846 and 1849. Such prints gave Victorian readers a close view of monuments many would never see, and the temple's later history adds weight to the image. Rising waters after the Aswan dams later submerged parts of Philae, and the complex was moved to nearby Agilkia Island in the 1970s.
