Roberts shows the grand approach to the temple complex on Philae, the island in the Nile near Aswan that was sacred to Isis. The temples there were built and extended over many centuries, and the approach leads the eye toward the pylons and colonnades that rise above the water. Roberts traveled through Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and this color lithograph, made by Louis Haghe, was issued as one part of his *Egypt & Nubia* series, published in London from 1846 to 1849. Philae later became famous for a UNESCO rescue effort in the 1960s, when the temples were moved to nearby Agilkia Island before the Aswan High Dam flooded the original site.
