This print shows the approach to the temple at Wadi es-Sebua, a rock-cut sanctuary in Nubia, on the Nile south of the First Cataract, with its processional route of sphinxes leading toward the entrance. The Scottish painter David Roberts sketched Egypt and Nubia during his travels in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned those sketches into color lithographs for the multi-part series published in London by F. G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. The plate is valuable both as a view of a monument then little known to European audiences and as a record of how Roberts's drawings reached readers at home.
