Roberts drew this temple at Wady Kardassy, a small ancient sanctuary in Lower Nubia, south of Aswan, where the stone rises above the desert sand. Roberts, a Scottish painter, made his Egyptian and Nubian sketches during his travels in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned them into color lithographs. Published by F.G. Moon in London in parts from 1846 to 1849, the series helped European readers see monuments that few had visited in person. The temple's remote setting, far up the Nile from the more famous ruins, is part of what makes this view worth a closer look.
