Two seated colossi of Rameses II once guarded the entrance to the Temple of Luxor, and this lithograph shows one of them as David Roberts sketched it during his travels in Egypt in the late 1830s. Sand had long buried the lower part of the figure, so the statue rises from a half-hidden base, a sight that gave European viewers a vivid sense of how much of ancient Egypt lay under the ground. Louis Haghe made the lithograph for *Egypt & Nubia*, a series published in London between 1846 and 1849 that brought Roberts's drawings to a wide audience.
