Luxor, the town built over the ruins of ancient Thebes, is the subject here, with the temple's monumental architecture at its center. David Roberts made his sketches during his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned them into this color lithograph for *Egypt & Nubia*, issued in London in parts between 1846 and 1849. The series did much to shape European ideas of Egypt, and this plate is worth noting for how it sets the massive pharaonic stonework against the everyday life of the town growing up among it.
