Asyut, the Upper Egyptian city shown here, sat on the Nile well south of Cairo and served as a trading center for caravans crossing the desert from the west and south. David Roberts sketched it during his journey through Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe made this color lithograph from those drawings for the multi-part work *Egypt & Nubia*. Issued in London in parts between 1846 and 1849, the plates brought Roberts's views of monuments and town life to a wide readership. Roberts's careful topographical eye makes this a useful record of the riverside city as it looked in the late 1830s.
