Roberts drew this view of the portico of the Temple of Edfu, the Ptolemaic-era sanctuary dedicated to the falcon god Horus, on November 23, 1838, during his journey up the Nile. The sand that had buried much of the temple by then gives the scene its sense of a monument partly recovered from the desert. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's on-site sketch into a color lithograph, and it appeared in *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F. G. Moon in parts between 1846 and 1849. Such plates helped European readers see ancient Egyptian architecture at a time when few could travel there.
