From beneath the portico, the view runs out toward the great pylon of the Temple of Horus at Edfu in Upper Egypt, a Ptolemaic-era sanctuary that was still partly buried in sand when Roberts visited. Roberts made his sketches during his Egyptian journey of 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned them into color lithographs for the London publisher F.G. Moon. Issued in parts in the late 1840s as part 32 of the first volume of *Egypt & Nubia*, the plate helped European readers picture monuments that few of them would ever see in person.
