Roberts drew this portico of the temple at Kalabshe, a sandstone sanctuary on the Nile in Nubia, during his 1838-1839 journey through Egypt and Nubia. The temple was built in the Roman period, under Augustus, and was dedicated to the Nubian sun god Mandulis. Louis Haghe's color lithograph, issued in parts by F. G. Moon between 1846 and 1849, shows the monument as Roberts saw it before the site was dismantled and rebuilt in the 1960s to escape the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
