This color lithograph looks outward from beneath the portico of the Temple of Dendera, the Ptolemaic-era sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Hathor in Upper Egypt. David Roberts, the Scottish painter who toured Egypt and Nubia in the late 1830s, drew the scene on site, and Louis Haghe transferred the sketch to stone for printing. It appeared as a plate in *Egypt and Nubia*, a multi-part publication issued in London by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849, when European interest in images of Egyptian monuments was high. Note how the massive columns frame the distant landscape.
