Bab-el-Malouk, the "Gate of the Kings," is the rock-cut entrance to the royal tombs of ancient Thebes, the necropolis on the west bank of the Nile opposite modern Luxor. David Roberts, the Scottish painter, sketched the monuments during his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into this color lithograph for *Egypt and Nubia*, published in London in the late 1840s. Roberts's views gave European readers of the period a vivid picture of ancient Egypt at a time when its monuments were only beginning to be studied in a systematic way.
