On the west bank of the Nile at Thebes, Medinet Habu is the mortuary temple of the pharaoh Ramesses III, and this plate shows its monumental stone walls and gateway as Roberts saw them. Roberts traveled in Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, sketching ruins on the spot, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into lithographs for the multivolume *Egypt & Nubia*. The plate appeared in London between 1846 and 1849 as part of the work's second volume. Its popularity helped fix the image of Egypt's antiquities for European readers of the period.
