Roberts drew this view of Dayr el Medeeneh on the west bank of Thebes, the ancient capital whose temples and tombs had drawn European travelers since the late eighteenth century. The plate comes from *Egypt & Nubia*, a large publication of Roberts's drawings made during his 1838–1839 journey, which Louis Haghe translated into color lithographs. Issued in parts between 1846 and 1849, the series helped define how Victorian readers pictured the monuments of the Nile. Look closely at the scale of the ruins against the open desert, a contrast Roberts used to convey the age and emptiness of the site.
