The great gateway pictured here is the entrance to the temple complex at Karnak, on the east bank of the Nile near the ancient city of Thebes. The image serves as the title-page vignette for the second volume of David Roberts's *Egypt and Nubia*. Roberts sketched the scene during his travels in Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe transferred those drawings to stone for the color lithographs. Published in London by F. G. Moon in the later 1840s, the work reached readers at a time of strong European fascination with ancient Egypt.
