Seen from the southwest, the great temple complex at Luxor stands above the modern town, a view that places the ruins of ancient Thebes against the Nile. David Roberts, the Scottish painter, traveled through Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839 and made his drawings on the spot. Louis Haghe turned those sketches into colored lithographs for this series, which London publisher F.G. Moon issued between 1846 and 1849. Notice how Roberts gives the massive columns and walls room against the open sky, a choice that made Egypt's monuments seem vast to European viewers at the time.
