The Karnak temple complex at Thebes, on the east bank of the Nile near modern Luxor, is the subject here, drawn by the Scottish painter David Roberts during his travels in Egypt in the late 1830s. This lithograph was published in London between 1846 and 1849 as part of the multi-volume *Egypt & Nubia*, with the color plates prepared by Louis Haghe from Roberts's sketches. Roberts's views of monuments like these helped shape European understanding of ancient Egypt in the decades before photography became common in the region. The plate is worth noticing for its sense of scale, with towering columns and carved walls set against the open desert sky.
