Dated March 7th, 1839, this view shows Petra, the rose-red city the Nabataeans carved into sandstone cliffs in southern Jordan. Few European readers had seen it before David Roberts reached the site and made his sketches. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's drawing into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. The plate helped fix the ruins in the Western imagination and remains one of the best-known images of the site from that era.
