Dated March 4, 1839, this plate depicts Mount Seir, the rugged range of Edom, and the Wady el Ghor below it, landscapes David Roberts reached during his journey through the region that year. He drew the scene on the spot, and Louis Haghe transferred it to stone for a color lithograph in *The Holy Land*, a series published in London by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. Roberts's sketches gave European readers of the period one of their most widely circulated visual accounts of biblical places, and this plate, which appears in the third volume, shows how he paired careful topography with rich tonal color.
