Dated in its title to February 22, 1839, this view of the Rock of Moses in the Wady el-Leja at the foot of Mount Horeb shows a spot long associated with the water miracle in Exodus. David Roberts sketched it during his travels through Egypt, Sinai and the Holy Land in 1838 and 1839. Louis Haghe later turned the drawing into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, issued in London in parts between 1842 and 1845, which brought these scenes to a wide European audience.
