The Chapel of Elijah on Mount Horeb is a stop along the traditional route up Sinai, the peak where Christian and Jewish tradition places the giving of the Law and where Elijah is said to have heard the still small voice. David Roberts drew the scene on his 1839 journey through Egypt and the Holy Land, and Louis Haghe turned his sketch into a color lithograph for Roberts's multi-volume The Holy Land, issued in parts by F. G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. The plate reflects the appetite of mid-century European readers for images of biblical sites, which Roberts's careful topography and the light on the rocky peaks made especially vivid.
