Roberts's lithograph shows the climb up Mount Sinai as he made it on February 20, 1839, a date printed right in the title, so the picture records a specific day rather than a generic view of the mountain. It was one of the plates in his three-volume The Holy Land, issued in parts by F. G. Moon in London between 1842 and 1845, with the stone work done by Louis Haghe after Roberts's sketches made on the spot. Roberts traveled through Egypt and the Near East in the late 1830s, and his images of biblical sites were enormously popular with British readers who could not make the journey themselves. The color lithograph is worth looking at for its handling of the rugged granite peaks and the small figures making their way upward.
