Roberts dated this view of the lower range of Sinai to February 18, 1839, the day of the ascent it commemorates. The plate comes from *The Holy Land*, the large series he compiled from sketches made on his travels through Egypt, Syria, and Arabia. Louis Haghe transferred the drawings to stone, and F.G. Moon published the color lithographs in parts between 1842 and 1845. The barren granite and sweeping perspective convey the mountain's remoteness, which helped draw nineteenth-century European readers to the Bible's account of the Exodus.
