Few sites in the Sinai drew more European attention than the walled monastery of Saint Catherine, which David Roberts sketched on February 21, 1839, during his tour of Egypt and the Near East. The Greek Orthodox community has occupied the site since the sixth century, when Emperor Justinian had its fortified walls built around the traditional location of the burning bush. Louis Haghe's color lithograph, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845, carries Roberts's on-the-spot drawing to a wide audience. Notice the high granite walls and the cluster of buildings against the mountain, which convey the isolation travelers often described.
