Dated February 28, 1839, this color lithograph is titled "Fortress of Akabah" and shows Petra, the rock-cut city in southern Jordan. David Roberts made the drawing on the spot during his tour of Egypt and the Holy Land in 1838 and 1839, when few European artists had reached Petra at all. The sheet was printed in London in the mid-1840s for *The Holy Land*, with the stone work by Louis Haghe, and the series helped make Petra's rose-colored cliffs familiar to Western audiences.
