The "Isle of Graia" in this view is the small island at the head of the Gulf of Aqaba, known today as Pharaoh's Island (Jazirat Fara'un). Roberts drew it in February 1839, during the Near Eastern journey that produced his Holy Land sketches. A medieval fortress stands on the island, built in the Crusader period under the name Graye, and its ruined walls are the feature a viewer is most likely to notice. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's drawing into this color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, which was published in London in parts between 1842 and 1845.
