Roberts gave this view of the island temple at Philae the name "bed of Pharaoh," a reference to the open-roofed structure that stands out among its ruins. He sketched the site during his tour of Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe transferred the drawing to stone for the color plates that F.G. Moon published in London between 1846 and 1849. Dedicated to the goddess Isis, Philae was a favorite stop for nineteenth-century travelers, and its temples were later moved to Agilkia Island in the 1970s to keep them above rising water from the Aswan dam.
