The temples at Abu Simbel, cut into a sandstone cliff on the west bank of the Nile in Nubia, are the focus of this plate, which the title spells "Aboosimble." Their four colossal seated figures of Ramesses II rise above the sand-filled entrance, a view that Scottish painter David Roberts sketched during his travels in Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839. Louis Haghe turned those drawings into color lithographs for *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London in parts between 1846 and 1849. The plates helped European readers see Pharaonic monuments that were still poorly known, at a time when the sites were only beginning to be cleared and recorded.
