Ibrim, the fortress town that gives this view its title, sits on a rocky height above the Nile in Lower Nubia, and Roberts drew it as travelers approached by river. The print comes from *Egypt & Nubia*, the large lithographic series based on the sketches Roberts made during his tour of the region in 1838 and 1839. Louis Haghe transferred those drawings to stone, and the color plates were issued in parts by F. G. Moon in London between 1846 and 1849. The series helped shape how European readers pictured the ancient and medieval monuments of the Nile valley, and it remains a useful record of sites that later changed greatly under the rising waters of the Aswan High Dam.
