Karnac, the vast temple complex on the east bank of the Nile near modern Luxor, is the subject here, drawn by the Scottish painter David Roberts during his journey through Egypt and Nubia in 1838–1839. This lithograph was published in the second volume of *Egypt & Nubia*, issued in parts in London between 1846 and 1849, with the stone printing carried out by Louis Haghe after Roberts's on-the-spot sketches. Roberts's work helped fuel European fascination with ancient Egypt, and his views of monumental ruins like Karnac, with their towering columns and pylons, gave readers a sense of scale that few travelers could convey in words.
