The Nilometer on the island of Rhoda, in the Nile opposite old Cairo, is a graduated column standing in a well that fills with river water. David Roberts made his sketches of Egypt during travels in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned them into this color lithograph for the third volume of *Egypt and Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849. Officials read the column's markings during the flood season to judge how high the river would rise, a figure that affected irrigation and the taxes charged on farmland. The print shows the structure much as nineteenth-century travelers would have encountered it.
