Philae, the island temple complex in the Nile near the First Cataract, is the subject here, shown as David Roberts saw it during his travels in Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839. The temples, dedicated largely to the goddess Isis, rise from the water with their pylons and colonnades, and the lithograph captures the island's rocky shoreline and the warm light that Roberts was known for. The plate was printed by Louis Haghe after Roberts's sketches and issued in parts by the London publisher F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. Its appeal lay in bringing a distant, still-remote monument to European readers who would never make the journey themselves.
