Unlike the temples and tombs that dominate most of Roberts's Egyptian views, this plate turns to a working machine: a Persian wheel, or sakia, used to lift water from the Nile into irrigation channels. Roberts drew the scene on his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned his sketches into color lithographs for *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F.G. Moon in parts between 1846 and 1849. The sakia, typically turned by oxen walking a circular path, shows how farmland along the river depended on human-powered hydraulics long before modern pumps.
