Roberts's view shows a ferry crossing the Nile toward Gizeh, where the pyramids rise on the western bank opposite Cairo. The print comes from the third volume of *Egypt & Nubia*, the large lithographic series based on sketches Roberts made during his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839. Louis Haghe, who turned Roberts's drawings into stone-printed plates, produced the images, and the color lithographs were issued in parts between 1846 and 1849. Like many of the series' plates, it balances the river traffic of everyday life against the monuments that drew European travelers to the region.
