Titled "Approach of the simoom," this plate shows the hot, dust-laden wind that sweeps across the desert, here bearing down on the plain near Gizeh. David Roberts, the Scottish painter, made his sketches during his travels in Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned them into lithographs for the three-volume *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849. Roberts's views were widely circulated and shaped how many European readers imagined Egypt, and this plate, found in volume three, shows the desert landscape around the pyramids as both vast and hostile.
