Roberts drew this view of ruined mosques on the desert edge west of Cairo's citadel, the medieval fortress the Ayyubid ruler Saladin began building in the late 1100s. Its tombs and mosques were built by the Mamluk sultans and their courtiers, and their domes and minarets stand out against the bare sand. Roberts made his sketches during his travels in Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned them into color lithographs for this multivolume publication, issued in London between 1846 and 1849. Its appeal lies in how it shows a city's architectural past sinking into the desert.
