Roberts drew this view of the Citadel of Cairo, which served as the seat of Muhammad Ali Pasha, the ruler who governed Egypt from 1805 until 1848. The fortress, begun by Saladin in the 1170s on the Muqattam hills above the city, had long dominated Cairo's skyline, and Muhammad Ali's palace and building projects gave it a new political role. Roberts traveled Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe's color lithograph, issued in the third volume of *Egypt & Nubia* in the late 1840s, helped bring such scenes to European readers.
