A public letter writer at work in Cairo is the subject here, a figure who composed and read documents for customers who could not write themselves. David Roberts sketched the scene on the spot during his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe transferred it to a color lithograph for the *Egypt & Nubia* volumes, issued in parts by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. Plates like this one gave European readers a view of ordinary street life in Cairo beyond the famous monuments that usually drew their attention.
