Among the scenes in David Roberts's *Egypt & Nubia*, this plate shows a mansion in Cairo whose facade is covered in arabesque ornament, a style of carved and painted decoration drawn from Islamic building traditions. Roberts sketched Egypt on his travels in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into color lithographs for the London edition issued by F.G. Moon in the late 1840s. Prints like this one gave European readers their first detailed look at the city's domestic architecture, and the plate is worth studying for how closely Roberts recorded the ornament's intricate patterns.
