Among the Cairo scenes Roberts recorded, this plate shows dancing girls, a subject that drew European travelers eager to see local entertainment. Roberts made his sketches on the spot during his travels in Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839. The lithographer Louis Haghe then turned them into color plates for the multi-volume *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F. G. Moon in the late 1840s, and this one appears in the third volume, page 37. Its colored finish suited Victorian readers' appetite for vivid views of the Near East.
