Few gateways in Cairo carry as much history as the entrance to the citadel, the fortress Saladin began building on a spur of the Muqattam hills in the 1170s. David Roberts made his drawings during his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe transferred them to color lithograph for the third volume of *Egypt and Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849. Roberts's views reached a wide European readership eager for images of the Near East, and this one records a stronghold that served as the seat of Egyptian government for centuries.
