A street in Cairo, rendered as a color lithograph, serves as the title page for one part of David Roberts's *Egypt & Nubia*. Roberts, a Scottish painter, made his sketches on the spot during his travels in Egypt in the late 1830s, and his work was turned into prints by Louis Haghe, whose lithographic skill made Roberts's views widely known. The series appeared in London under publisher F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849, arriving at a time when European readers had a strong appetite for images of the Near East. Look closely at the crowded street, where the architecture and the people's dress reflect the city as Roberts saw it.
