The bazaar of the silk mercers in Cairo is shown as a busy covered market, rendered in color lithography for the third volume of David Roberts's *Egypt & Nubia*. Roberts, a Scottish painter, traveled through Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839 and made his sketches on the spot, and the plates were translated into lithographs by Louis Haghe. The series appeared in London under the publisher F. G. Moon between 1846 and 1849, and it helped shape how European readers pictured Middle Eastern cities in the mid-nineteenth century. Its detailed street scenes are often valued today as records of local trades and architecture.
