The name on this plate, "Mosque El Mooristan," refers to the complex built in Cairo by the Mamluk sultan Qalawun, completed in 1285 as a mosque and a hospital, or *maristan*, in the Arabic term. David Roberts sketched the city during his 1838 to 1839 visit to Egypt, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into color lithographs for *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F. G. Moon in the late 1840s. The plates gave European readers a detailed view of Cairo's medieval monuments at a time when few of them had seen the city firsthand.
